A dual boot allows you to conveniently install two (or more) operating systems on one computer so that you can cleverly combine the disadvantages and advantages of the respective versions. A second test Windows with which you can experiment and a primary Windows for working are also often recommended.
If you want to use an existing Windows 98 or Me in a dual boot with Windows 2000/NT/XP, this is no longer a problem, as the latter operating systems, which are based on Windows NT, have their own boot manager, which asks the user for the desired version at system startup. However, you must have installed Windows 98/Me first, as it is no longer possible to add such an operating system later, e.g. to Windows XP, without damaging the system files.
The sequence also plays an important role if you only rely on the Windows NT operating systems: You must first have set up Windows NT before you venture to install Windows 2000 and then install XP. The server versions also always have a higher priority than their workstation counterparts: For example, Windows 2000 Professional can no longer be installed on an existing Windows 2000 Server. The same applies to Windows XP and its server version Windows .NET.
The combination of Windows 98/Me and Windows 2000 or XP can also be realized in a triple boot. Unfortunately, it is impossible to install 2 Windows 98 versions or a Windows 98 and Me on one hard disk, as these operating systems each require a primary partition for a correct setup of the boot files (C:\). Windows Tweaks helps you here and enables the parallel use of Windows 98 and another equivalent version (98/Me). I will not only describe how to set up 2 C:\, i.e. primary partitions, but also how you can switch to the other one by double-clicking and pressing a button. I recommend backing up the system completely beforehand, as Partition Magic 7.0 makes some changes to the system.
And this is how you create a dual boot between Windows 98 and Me, whereby you can also complete the process with two Windows 98 versions:
1. Start PartitionMagic Pro 7.0 and click with the right mouse button on your C:\ Partition und wählen Sie „Resize/Move„. Verkleinern Sie diese auf unter 2048 MB (2 gigabytes), because the next primary partition can only be started if the first one does not exceed a certain area of the hard disk (the first 1024 cylinders).
2. Klicken Sie nun auf „OK„, damit die neue Größe in der Voransicht angezeigt wird. Nun klicken Sie mit der rechten Maustaste auf den ersten freien Bereich neben ihrer C:\ Partition, die kleiner als 2048 MB sein sollte, und wählen Sie „Create„. Markieren Sie unter „Create As“ die „Primary Partition“ und stellen Sie eine gewünschte Größe für ihr zweites Windows 98/Me ein.
3. Ich empfehle ihnen noch ein paar Gigabyte für eine dritte logische Partition freizulassen, auf welche Sie von beiden Betriebssysteme aus zugreifen können. Da es für Windows keine zwei primären Partitionen gibt ist es auch nicht möglich von Windows 98 beispielsweise den Festplatteninhalt von Windows Me zu lesen, weshalb eine Partition, auf die beide zugreifen können empfehlenswert ist. Klicken Sie hierzu auf den restlichen Bereich ihrer Festplatte, wählen Sie „Create“ und legen Sie eine „Logical Partition“ mit der restlichen Größe der Festplatte an.
4. Bevor Sie nun die Änderungen übernehmen bitte ich Sie noch einmal dringenst zur Überprüfung, ob alle wichtigen Dateien und Dokumente von ihnen gesichert sind. Nachdem Sie sich genügend vergewissert haben, klicken Sie auf „Apply Changes„. Nun verlangt Partition Magic, dass Sie den Rechner neustarten.
5. Sie finden sich nun in DOS wieder, da hier sämtliche Änderungen an der Festplattenstruktur ausgeführt werden. Nach einigen Minuten sollte der Vorgang beendet sein (Wenn Sie viele Daten auf ihrer Platte haben kann es auch ca. eine Stunde gehen) und Sie finden sich wieder in Windows 98. Wenn Sie nun unter „Workplace“ schauen so ist die Partition verschwunden, die Sie für Windows Me oder ihr zweites Windows eingerichtet haben.
6. Nun müssen Sie die zweite primäre Partition mit Win98/Me als Standard auswählen und mit dem Betriebssystem bestücken: Klicken Sie auf „Start“ > „Programs“ > „PowerQuest PartitionMagic Pro 7.0“ und wählen Sie das Programm „PQ Boat“ aus.
Hier wird nun ihre zweite primäre Partition erkannt und Sie können beruhigt eine „2“ eintippen. Unverhofft startet das System neu. Nun müssen Sie mit der Installation guide for Windows Me continue.
