Windows 2000 – Die Windows 2000 Service Dienste deaktivieren

Each time the system is started, so-called services are started, which are responsible for various areas such as automatic updates or the network. Some of these services are very important, while others can be completely deactivated.

This lists all the services that can be disabled to speed up the startup process, reduce background activity and free up more memory. I recommend making a backup of the system beforehand, as this is very experimental and therefore somewhat dangerous, as each system can react differently.

3. A double-click is also sufficient here to call up a huge list. To deactivate a service of your choice, according to the list below, or to set it to manual, simply double-click on it and select the desired setting under Startup type.

These services can be deactivated on most computers

Here you will find a list of all services. You will probably find the so-called services (the services also have this name) in this exact order. On the test computers used, setting these services to Manual or Disabled worked perfectly, but this will not always be the case. As already mentioned in the backup article, I recommend deactivating 5 services one after the other.

The standard services of Windows 2000

I have listed the settings directly after a fresh installation in the third column Standard so that you can reset your services to the original values in the event of errors. Scroll all the way down to find out about problems with deactivating various services.

And here is the list, as it should also be on your site later:

Print queue

If this option is deactivated, the system will still work, but Windows 2000 will no longer recognize the printer (and possibly the scanner).

RAS connection management and telephony

After you have set this service to Disabled, the Internet connection no longer works

DHCP client

If you use a router in your network, deactivating the service means that access to the Internet is no longer available.

Removable media

Without this service, you will no longer be able to view ZIP drives in My Computer or view your CD/DVD drives under Computer Management, for example.

Many services restrict your computer, but everyone should decide for themselves how far this restriction goes. If, for example, you do not need a ZIP drive or the Internet on your PC, you can activate these services to improve performance. This is particularly important if you only run ONE application, such as games or CAD/CAS/CAE.

Herzlichen Glückwunsch – Bestanden!

You have now deactivated all services and have certainly gained your own experience with the list. Do not hesitate and email me your problems to webmaster@windows-tweaks.info!

A little side note: If you are planning a new installation, it is helpful if you take the optimized settings with you. This eliminates the need to reconfigure the services:

1. open the Windows registry by clicking on Start/Run and typing regedit.

2. navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\Services and click on File/Export. Now select the path and the file name and save this entire part of the registry. In future, you can double-click on this file so that the settings are applied immediately!
