Ein Spiele, eine Büroanwendung oder ein DVD Film – sie alle haben eine für den Benutzer meist ärgerliche Eigenschaft: Sie starten sich automatisch nachdem man die kleinen Silberlinge ins Laufwerk gelegt hat. Wenn man aber nur ein paar Daten von der CD benötigt ist es mehr als lästig jedesmal zu warten, bis der Willkommensbildschirm oder das Installationsprogramm geladen haben. Es wäre also sehr effektiv diesen Autostart für CDs und DVDs vollständig abzuschalten, was sich aber unter Windows 2000 als nicht gerade leicht entpuppt. Während man bei Windows 98/Me dies noch per Mausklick im Geräte-Manager erreichte so muss man mit tiefen chirurgischen Eingriffen ans System gehen:
1. In the Start menu, click on Execute and type in the command line regedit in.
2. Now navigate to the Windows registration to the keys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom and double-click on the value in the right-hand pane Autorun.
3. Now enter the following in the line that appears instead of the 1 a simple 0 to deactivate the autostart.
